BOOMERSHOOT CLINIC
Friday and Saturday
27 and 28 April 2007
If you want to attend the Clinic, fill out the
Registration Form and the Goals Worksheet and send
them to Eugene with your check.
(Clinic is full now. Contact Gene to be put on the waiting list)
Fellow Boomershooters!
Another year has gone by and Joe is ahead of schedule with his Boomershoot
bulletin. Note that this year you can reserve specific firing points for the
shoot itself. I already have two points, 54 and 55, which are centered up on top
of the berm. If this year is anything like last year, we will make a whole bunch
of noise and smoke.
I already have six ‘return shooters’ signed up for the Clinic so I got cracking
on the Clinic bulletin. As in the past, if you are new to the Boomer Shoot –
please read the AARs from the last clinics. I am sending the 2K6 AAR with this
Clinic announcement. These yearly AARs will answer most of your questions. If
you have any further questions, please call or write me and I will give you the
best advice possible.
The cost this year will be $75.00 per person for one day and $130.00 per person
for both days. If you have someone who will not shoot but who will be spotting
only – they are still part of the clinic and must pay the same as the shooter.
This is the only way I can keep the Clinic fair to everyone.
I will offer the ‘Field Fire’ only entry this year for anyone who does not want
to attend the formal part of the Clinic and does not want any coaching. The cost
will be $15.00 per shooter per afternoon. This will also cover one large and one
small boomer at the end of the day. Field Fire shooters will not be
allowed to set up before 1200 daily. For those who want to Field Fire
only, contact me at
eaecon@comcast.net and we will work out the details.
CLINIC TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
As with any type of training I run, no matter the audience, the intent
remains one of learning. We believe that shooting is best learned through
coaching and under conditions that do not place unnecessary stress on the
shooter. Our shooters come from all walks of life and the success of the Clinic
and Boomershoot is that we can leave the stresses of daily life behind and enjoy
a weekend of shooting, learning, and conversation.
This year part of the Clinic Registration Form includes your personal goals for
the Clinic. We believe that you get the most for your money if you achieve your
own goals so this year I am requesting that you identify some shooting related
goals that you want to achieve during the Clinic. In this manner, my cadre can
focus in on your goals and make your experience one that will be satisfying,
productive, and of course – extremely fun. This is a clinic. Not a competitive
event and not a shooting academy. You will see new shooters, hunters,
experienced competitive shooters, and families on the firing line, all enjoying
the challenges of long range marksmanship.
We will be conducting our normal short classes for the benefit of new Clinic
shooters and then will shoot steel targets from 375 to 700 yards. We break for
lunch and shoot more steel until about 1500. Then we go down range and get one
large and two small Boomers per shooter that Joe and his crew will place for the
shooter. At about 1600 we will shoot these explosive targets and ‘clean up’ any
that didn’t get hit. A short AAR completes the day.
DAILY SCHEDULE
0830: We will gather at 0830 to get signed in and to go over the
safety issues concerning this firing range. Before we move onto the firing line
– we will need to get into two person teams so sign up with your buddy or tell
me and we will find another individual shooter to buddy up with.
0900 – 1000 Formal Instruction: We will have a short block of instruction
on the following topics in order to get us started.
Safety Briefing – Range Rules that will govern our actions for the rest
of the day.
Data Book Organization – I will produce and distribute to all clinic
shooters a small data book for the Clinic. We will cover this data book so you
can understand why it is designed the way it is and how to use it for your
training. These little books are very good to use for getting and recording
zeros and accuracy information.
Your Goals for the Day – We will briefly go over how setting goals for
yourself will allow you to achieve success during the day and how my cadre can
assist you if you desire coaching.
Wind Doping – I will emplace about ten wind flags on the range and we
will use these flags along with a common sense method of doping winds to get us
into the ‘ball park’.
1000 – 1030 Firing Position Demonstration: My Assistant Instructor and I
will cover the following steps for all to see.
Rifle and Equipment Inspection: More than common sense – a necessity to
eliminate any mechanical problems before shooting.
Establishing a Firing Position: We will take a look at someone’s bench
position and a prone position in terms of making that firing position do as much
of the work as physically possible.
Shooter / Observer Dialogue: Take my word for it, the ability of a
shooter and his spotter to communicate very clearly is essential if you want to
blow up boomers. This has been a weak point with many teams in the past and this
year we will really attempt to get team members to talk with each other while
shooting.
1030 – 1200 Spanking Steel I: Joe has some steel disks on his range and I
will bring from ten to twenty additional steel targets of various sizes for you
to shoot so you can gather information on the shooting conditions of the range
and evaluate your loads for accuracy.
1230 – 1300 Lunch and Lessons Learned: All quiet on the firing line for
our lunch. Bring your lunch or eat fast food from a fellow who caters to the
Boomershoot every year. Enjoy the company and conversation of fellow shooters.
We will gather and conduct a lessons learned for fifteen or so minutes before
more shooting again.
1300 – 1530 Spanking Steel II: Get zeros, get zeros, and get zeros. Learn
how to read trace, how to talk with a shooter, how to dope winds. Results will
bring confidence and precision.
1530 - 1600 Issue Boomers: One large and two small per shooter – placed
where you want them as long as they are inside Joe’s impact areas.
1600 – 1700 Shoot the Boomers!
1700 – UTC – After Action Review
RULES AND REGULATIONS
If anyone is new to the Clinic and Boomershoot, look at the pictures of the
firing area that Joe Huffman has in his web pages. There is a farm road running
along the left flank and a farm house across this road. Bullets must stay in the
impact area on the side of the hill and when the order to cease fire is given,
it must be obeyed immediately. Here are my regulations concerning the Clinic.
Maintain full muzzle awareness at all times.
Load on the firing line.
Unload and make safe on command.
Finger goes on trigger only after barrel is pointed into the impact area.
You may remove your rifle from the firing line to clean and maintain at any time
you wish. Take it on yourself to clear and remove the rifle while maintaining
muzzle awareness.
If you insist on carrying a pistol, secure it to your body in a manner that
prohibits it from pointing at anyone while you are in any position.
REGULATIONS CONCERNING FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION
No .50 Caliber BMG rifles please.
If you want to shoot your .338 Lapua or Winchester, contact me at
eaecon@comcast.net for specific rules.
Any rifle that is .30 Caliber or under is authorized. Best effects on Boomers
seem to come from 6 and 6.5 mm cartridges.
No ‘Solids’, AP, or API bullets please.
Tracers are authorized only if Joe Huffman so authorizes their use.
Any Black Powder rifle of any caliber is authorized.
Any pistol is authorized. Just remember that our first bank of steel is at 375
yards.
RECOMMENDED PACKING LIST
It is hard to say what the weather will be like at the end of April. We have
had sleet and snow, fine sunny weather, and a mixture of the above all in one
day. Pack accordingly. Here are some reminders.
Rifle and Back-Up Rifle: It would be a pity to show up with one rifle and
have mechanical problems that preclude your enjoying the Clinic. Bring a back up
rifle.
AR or AK: After we have shot at our boomer targets, we sweep the impact
area and finish off any that have not been detonated. An AR-15 or AK with a
magazine or two of blasting ammo will let you have a whole lot of fun at the end
of each day.
Back Up Optic: Another good idea.
100 rounds of Ammunition per Clinic Day
Spotting Scope: An absolute must if you are to learn how to dope wind and
read bullet trace. If you have signed up as part of a two man team, make sure
your team has at least one spotting scope of very good quality.
A Solid Rest for Your Rifle
Ear Protection: Required. I recommend some electronic ear muffs as we
will be talking while others are shooting.
Clothing for Hot through Cold and Wet Conditions
Food and Water for Lunch
If you want to attend the Clinic, fill out the
Registration Form and the Goals Worksheet and send
them to me with your check. Sorry, I do not take credit card.
Thank you again and let’s have a great time in April!
